SCORESHEET
NAHA kicked off 2010 on the banks of the Red River in Shreveport Louisiana. Perfect weather greeted the 18 competitors and the great crowd that came out to watch them. Two tie breaker finishes and an epic performance by strongman Andy Vincent showed why the NAHA is the best strength sport organization and how it only gets better when we throw stuff by the bayou.
In the high school LW, Wesley Prevot won a close 2 point victory highlighted by his 19'+ HWFD, a monster throw by a high school sophomore. In the high school HW, Garrett Chandler won over Marshall John, but these two athletes posted 23 and 22 reps on the axle deadlift, which would have placed them second and third in the men's MW division. Once again, high school sophomores! The master's saw BIG Chris McCord sweep to the win and post the third biggest HWFD of the competition. Chis also, is a first time thrower! The men's LW was a battle all day. The 3 Highland Games events saw Tony Sherba and Jason Irvin swap and share the overall lead twice. Ronnie Woodall ran away with the Axle DL with a competition high 31 reps. Jed Blackburn chased Ronnie all day and the final 3rd and 4th placings came down to the second tie breaker giving Ronnie 3rd place. In the men's MW, James Kerr ran away and took 1st place with him early and kept it all day. David Dugas and Gary Don Gantt tied for 2nd with David getting the nod on the first tiebreaker. In the heavyweights, the Vincent brothers from Baton Rouge came north and impressed us all in the regular events and by cleaning and pressing The Black Death Axle. Keep your eye on Andy Vincent, this young man is bound for greatness.
Overall, many new Highlander competitors were made, many new Highlander fans were attracted and a new tradition of quality strength sport was started in northwest Louisiana. Thanks to all my volunteers and my head judge Jon Magendie, I could not have made this go without ya'll.
Louisiana Highlander only has one thing to say now, to quote Arnold, WE'LL BE BACK!"
